Microsoft Office or OpenOffice for Faculty and Students?

Microsoft Office and OpenOffice have similar technical capabilities, and OpenOffice is a good substitute for students who are unable or unwilling to purchase MS Office. Although incompatibilities between the two products are already quite rare, the use of mutually supported file formats will minimize the remaining risk.
